The Leighton Education Centre Redevelopment Project represents a long-overdue rejuvenation of the educational facilities at The Leighton Centre. Located just south of Calgary in the foothills on Treaty 7 lands, this historical resource welcomes some 25,000 students from all over southern Alberta every year. Students come to attend classes and workshops to learn about art, crafts, the surrounding landscape and animal life as well as the history connected to the grounds and its founders. It is not far fetched to say that Alfred and Barbara Leighton had considerable roles in the establishment of the arts community in Alberta. Couple that with their passion for teaching everyone about art and this project represents a significant element of arts history in Alberta.

The building takes inspiration from it’s context and seeks to tie the historical elements of the site together while providing a contemporary multipurpose facility for the visitors to The Leighton Education Centre.
