House on Jackfish Lake

Cabin on Jackfish Lake is a modest year-round residence overlooking Jackfish Lake on the Saskatchewan prairie. Designed for retired clients who regularly host their children and grandchildren, the home balances quiet daily living with flexible gathering spaces that expand to accommodate family. Rather than competing with its dramatic setting, the architecture responds to the landscape through a simple composition of familiar forms, restrained materials, and carefully framed views.

The home is organized into two distinct volumes connected by a glazed link. One contains the private bedrooms, while the other houses the shared living, dining, and kitchen spaces that open toward the lake. The massing draws from the traditional gable forms of prairie barns and agricultural outbuildings, creating a familiar architectural language rooted in its rural context. The private volume is subtly canted, recalling the weathered barns that lean across the prairie landscape. This gesture serves as both an acknowledgement of the passage of time and a quiet architectural tribute to the homeowners as they begin a new stage of life.

The exterior is clad in reclaimed barn wood and charcoal standing seam metal. Together, these materials bridge past and present, connecting the home to the history of the prairie while providing a durable, contemporary envelope. Inside, warm wood finishes, polished concrete floors, and generous glazing create bright, understated spaces that frame expansive views of the lake and surrounding grasslands. Large sliding doors dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, allowing the home to expand onto sheltered outdoor living spaces and reinforcing a strong connection to the landscape throughout the seasons.
